What Are Joint Injections?

Pain and inflammation, for the most part, are simple facts of life. They should not be so persistent and chronic, however, that they keep you from enjoying your favorite activities and enjoying a baseline sense of comfort from day to day. If you’ve been experiencing chronic pain, we’re proud to offer pain injections at the Advanced Relief Institute. Joint injections under fluoroscopy offer you a highly effective and totally non-surgical treatment option that can help you effectively manage chronic joint pain and inflammation.

This procedure is particularly useful for conditions affecting joints such as the knee, hip, or shoulder, thanks to its ability to quickly and accurately deliver effective medication to the precise location of your pain so you can enjoy maximal relief and minimal discomfort. Ready to learn more about how pain injections can help you regain your sense of comfort and overall quality of life? Simply reach out to the Advanced Relief Institute and set up your initial consultation to begin your journey to a more comfortable experience.

Am I the Ideal Candidate?

Your journey to lasting pain relief will begin with an initial consultation between you and an expert provider from the Advanced Relief Institute’s team. Your provider will get to know you and the issue that brought you through our doors before exploring a variety of options that can help us address your pain at its root cause and then craft a treatment plan that sees you enjoying complete relief.  We’ll be likely to recommend pain injections to you if you’ve been dealing with the following issues:

  • You have been experiencing chronic joint pain that has begun to affect your mobility and daily life or has already been doing so.
  • You have not been able to find adequate relief by utilizing other treatments like medications or physical therapy.
  • You have been evaluated and deemed suitable for this treatment by a licensed physician after a thorough medical review and routine evaluation.

How Do Joint Injections Work?

On the day of your joint injection treatment, you’ll join us in our relaxing office setting. We’ll ensure that you’re positioned comfortably before carefully cleansing the treatment area with an antiseptic solution. A local anesthetic will then be applied to the treatment area, ensuring your total comfort while the procedure is performed. Using fluoroscopy—a form of real-time imaging technology—your physician will then precisely guide a thin needle into the affected joint.

After your provider has aspirated any excess fluid from the joint and confirmed the needle’s correct placement with a contrast agent, a combination of medications will be injected. This may include corticosteroids for inflammation, anesthetics for comfort, hyaluronic acid for joint lubrication, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for healing and regeneration.

Once the procedure is complete, the injection site will be cleaned, and a Band-Aid will be applied to finish the procedure. A relatively simple experience, your joint injection session will likely take only five to 15 minutes to complete. Treatments can be repeated every few weeks if necessary, and we’ll work with you to set up a treatment schedule that works for you.

Pre-Op and Post-Op Instructions

Before the Procedure

Before the day of your pain injection procedure, you’ll want to arrange for transportation to and from our office space. In some instances, driving is not recommended by your doctor immediately after the procedure. You’ll also want to be sure that you discuss all of your current medications with the doctor, especially blood thinners, which might need to be paused.

After Your Pain Injections

Once your pain injections are over, you’ll want to rest the treated joint and avoid strenuous activities, swimming, and saunas for at least 24 to 48 hours. You can apply ice if you experience any minor swelling or discomfort. Watch for any signs of infection or adverse reactions, and be sure to reach out to us immediately if you do notice them. We’ll work with you to schedule a follow-up appointment so we can assess your progress and determine if additional treatments or injections are necessary.
